Social media for local businesses: where to start

For a business that mostly serves its own town, social media is not a race for followers. It is the shop window a customer looks through before walking in: what you offer, what your place looks like, whether you are open, whether other people trust you. This guide is for shops, restaurants, holiday rentals, clinics and offices in Chalkida and across Evia that want to start properly, without spending time on things that bring nothing back.
Choose channels by where your customers are
You do not need to be everywhere. For most local businesses in Greece, Instagram and Facebook cover most of the audience: Instagram for images and reels, Facebook for updates, events and a slightly older crowd. TikTok is worth it when you can produce video consistently. Most important of all, and often forgotten, is your Google Business Profile, because that is where anyone searching "near me" finds you.
Get the basics right
- The same name, logo and description on every channel.
- Address, phone, opening hours and a link to your website, kept up to date.
- A short bio that says what you do and where, in the words a customer would type into a search.
- A professional (business or creator) account, so you can see statistics and run ads.
What to post
The best content for a local business is specific: today's dish, the room ready for the next guest, the new product on the shelf, the team at work. A few themes that work almost everywhere:
- The product or service, in a good photo or a short video.
- The place and the people, because customers want to know where they are going and who they will meet.
- Practical information: opening hours, bookings, new arrivals, seasonal changes.
- Proof: customer reviews (with their permission), finished projects, before and after.
Steady, not frequent
Two or three posts a week, every week, do more than ten in one month and none the next. A simple monthly content calendar, with ideas and photos ready in advance, makes consistency easy. Stories are for everyday moments and do not need to be perfect. Posts on your profile stay there, so they should show your best.
The image makes the difference
In the feed, people decide in a second whether to stop. A professional shoot once a year, or every time the season changes, gives you material for months: photos of the place, the products and the people for social media, your website and your ads alike. See for example the shoot for To Chalkino Katsaroli, where one day of shooting covered the dishes and the dining room together.
Advertising with local targeting
Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) can target a radius around your business. For a local business, a small daily budget behind a post that has already done well, aimed at Chalkida and the surrounding area, is usually a better start than a big campaign. Decide in advance what you want: messages, calls, bookings or website visits.
Measure what matters
Likes do not pay the bills. Each month, look at how many messages, calls, bookings or website visits came from social media, and ask new customers how they found you. Do more of what brings results. Change what does not.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a local business post?
Two or three times a week is a realistic target for most businesses. Consistency matters more than the number of posts.
Do I need both Instagram and Facebook?
It depends on where your customers are. Often both are worth it, since a post can go out to both at once from Meta Business Suite.
When is it worth handing social media to a partner?
When you cannot find the time to post consistently, when you need professional photography, or when you want to start advertising with measurable goals.
